Mission of the Institute

The Institute for the Advancement of Teaching in Higher Education (IATHE or "the Institute") is a strategic alliance of educational development experts, award winning teachers, educational associations and institutions and corporations who are actively engaged in the scholarship of teaching and learning through the design and the delivery of professional development resources, programs and events to foster teaching excellence in higher education.

Histoty of the Institute

The idea behind the formation of the Institute was to create a sustainable mechanism for collaboration in higher education across Canada and internationally. Essentially, the Institute represents a mechanism for partnership between educational associations and private-sector businesses as they work towards common goals in higher education such as providing professional development resources to faculty and improving learning opportunities for students.

Specifically, the Institute grew out of a Pan-Canadian collaborative effort funded by CANARIE (Industry Canada) called the Universities Collaborative Communities for E-Learning Adoption (UCCELA). The UCCELA project was composed of two initiatives that address collaboration through broadband Internet technologies: facultydevelopment.ca and e-Kit. Both initiatives are successfully facilitating collaboration and E-Learning, however a means to sustain them past the initial funding was required.

The Institute is this sustainable mechanism for our continued collaboration. It is an incorporated not-for-profit business that has been founded as a strategic alliance and collaboration of stakeholders from higher education and the private sector. It is governed by an elected Board.
